About the Event
Two experts in civility will present a framework for civil discourse, illustrate how the process is different from other forms of public engagement such as debate, and offer perspective on how this unique form of civic participation can foster understanding and strengthen communities. They will also guide us through a brief activity so we can experience the power of civil discourse – freely expressing ourselves in a spirit of mutual respect.
Joan McGregor is professor of philosophy at ASU, the Director of the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics, and the Principal Investigator on a grant to cultivate the civic virtue in university students and in educational leaders to promote civic virtues in their classes.
John Genette is co-author of “Hot Topics, Cool Heads: A Handbook for Civil Dialogue.” He is also a co-founder of the Institute for Civil Dialogue at ASU, working with faculty to incorporate civil dialogue into the school's curriculum. …
