First, we heard from elections office, Angela Brand, with insights on the process of retrieving, validating and counting ballots in Maricopa County. 
Next, Maricopa Cty Democratic party Data Analyst, Emily Wilson, spoke about voting data for our area, and how and where we should target our efforts to get out the vote.ly

And Mark Robert Gordon, candidate for CD1 US House of Representatives, is a native Arizonan, with experience in business, voting rights, humanitarian aid who advocates for workers, small business and voter protection.

Terry Goddard is President of the Central Arizona Water Conservation District (CAWCD) and is no stranger to BMD&F.  Terry oversees the Central Arizona Project (CAP), the 336 mile system that delivers about 90% of Cave Creek's water supply.  He will discuss key water issues and the impact of the on-going drought in 7 SW states.
He was elected to his 3rd term of the CAWCD Board of Directors and will represent Maricopa County until 2030.
Terry will also discuss the importance of re-electing our current Governor, Attorney General, and Secretary of State

Rick McCartney has lived in Arizona's 1st Congressional District for more than 30 years.  He raised his family and built his business in this district.  Rick is running for Congress to stand up to Trump and end his lawless assault on our communities.

ENGAGING IN CIVIL DISCOURSE:
WHY IT MATTERS, AND HOW TO DO IT

 

 Two scholars in civility will present a framework for civil discourse, and offer perspective on how this unique form of civic participation can foster understanding and strengthen communities.  They will also guide us through a brief activity so we can experience the power of civil discourse – freely expressing ourselves in a spirit of mutual respect. 
 
Joan McGregor is a professor of philosophy and Director of the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics at Arizona State University.  McGregor researches and publishes in legal philosophy, bioethics, and social and political philosophy.  She is Principal Investigator on a grant entitled: Cultivating Civic, Moral, and Epistemic Virtues Among Undergraduates in Arizona’s Public Universities.  McGregor got her BA in philosophy at University of California Davis an MA and a PhD in philosophy at University of Arizona where she also studied law.  The Arizona Humanities Council picked her as Public Humanities Scholar in 2019.  She is an avid hiker and devoted environmentalist living happily for many years in the Cave Creek/Carefree area.
 
John Genette, President, Black Mountain Communications Inc., has facilitated hundreds of community dialogues.  He is co-founder of the Institute for Civil Dialogue, promoting civility in public and personal conversations, and co-author of Hot Topics, Cool Heads: A Handbook for Civil Dialogue.  He is also co-founder of The Storyscope Project, fostering inclusiveness through community story circles.  He holds an MA in Communication from ASU, where he served the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication as an Honorary Research Fellow, and completed a doctoral program in wisdom studies at the young age of 67.

FRANCESCA MARTIN is the Deputy Director of Keep Arizona Blue at ASU, where she is in her third year of pursuing a degree in Political Science.  Keep AZ Blue focuses on electing Democrats up and down the ballot by engaging young voters.  Francesca was inducted into the Democratic Party’s Hall of Fame and is passionate about engaging young voters in politics and democratic values.

Jacob George is dedicated to ensuring working-class representation. He is currently a student at Arizona State University and a Phoenix-area resident. Jacob serves on the Balsz Elementary School Board, and his experience running numerous Democratic campaigns and working with nonprofit initiatives will help propel Unity Rising across Arizona. As the founder of Unity Rising, he is committed to amplifying the voices of working Arizonans and supporting candidates dedicated to common-sense change. With the critical 2026 election approaching, Jacob believes in the power of grassroots action to shape a future that works for everyone.

Dianne Post is an international human rights attorney and activist.  She discussed bills being filed at our state legislature and what actions can be taken to make our voices heard.  We need to let our local politians know we are watching and we care.

Isabel Hiserodt is the Deputy Manager at Indivisible, a grassroots organization dedicated to electing progressive leaders, protecting democracy and fight the current administrations agenda.  Her talk was uplifting and inspiring.

Terry Goddard gave his take on the election results and their impact on our State and the nation.  Terry has a long history of political activism, serving on the CAWCD Board, as Mayor of Phoenix from 1984-1990 and as Arizona Attorney General from 2003-2011.
