COLLATERAL DAMAGE

(The War on Women’s Health and Lives )

Tuesday, September 13, 2022
11:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Desert Foothills Library

38443 N School House Road, Cave Creek

                             Civia Tamarkin

International Journalist, Filmmaker and Reproductive Freedom Activist

The Supreme Court Dobbs Decision and What it Means for American Women and the 2022 Election

Judicial, political, religious, and corporate factions in this country are waging a war on women. They are not just battling over abortion; they are fighting over a person’s basic human right to maintain sovereignty over their own body and make their own medical decisions. This decades-long war has reached a crucial point. The US Supreme Court declared unconstitutional a 1973 ruling that gave women the right to choose if and when they wanted to be pregnant.

The states now can enshrine reproductive freedom in their constitutions or enact Draconian laws forcing pregnancy on unwilling women even in cases of rape, incest or threats to a woman’s life or well-being. Arizona is one of numerous states whose legislatures and/or constitutions will criminalize any attempt to terminate a pregnancy even in the case of miscarriage or lack of fetal viability. Many methods of contraception and restricting the ability of women to cross state lines to receive healthcare are also on the line.

This is your opportunity to learn what is being done nationally and in Arizona to protect women’s rights and what you can do to help.

The Arizona We Want:  The Decade Ahead.

At the August BMD&F meeting Celia Casuga presented the results of a study,  The                                            Arizona We Want, The Decade Ahead, conducted by the Center for the Future of                                                Arizona.  The study asked over 3000 citizens to indicate their satisfaction level with                                              several important issues we are facing, from education to immigration.  For key findings                                    of this study, go to www.arizonafuture.org

PROTECT PUBLIC EDUCATION
STOP ESA VOUCHER EXPANSION

We must stop this bill from going into effect. We can do this by passing a referendum, in November.  To get this issue on the ballot, we must get 118,823 signatures before September 24th.  This would put the law on hold until the November 2024 election, allowing AZ voters to decide whether tax dollars should fund any type of non-public school.  Current voucher eligibility would remain.  You can sign this petition at the BMD&F monthly meeting on September 17th.  Learn more at www.teamsosarizona.com

GOOD NEWS

Are there moments when you could use a pick-me-up from negative News?  Then, go to "Month of Good News," updated most days, at  https://www.blackmountaindems.com/good-news.  Recent examples:

[Biden finally found his voice.]   On 8/25 (edited):  I want to be crystal clear what's on your ballot. Your right to choose, your Social Security, the safety of our kids from gun violence, the planet's very survival, your right to vote, even democracy.  Are you ready to fight for these things now?

Long bland White House tweets are now punchier, even viral.  Thank new hire Megan Coyne. The previous few thousand followers jumped to 200,000 retweeting and 700,000 likes. ~ Yasmeen Abutaloeb, Washington Post, August 6, 2022

“All the talk about the deficit from the same folks that gave an unpaid-for $2 trillion tax cut to the wealthy and big corporations. It makes you laugh. Under my Administration, the deficit is on track to come down by more than $1T this year”. ~  White House Tweet, August 28, 2022

To Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene's "it's completely unfair" condemnation of Biden's partial student loan forgiveness [up to $20,000]:  the White House tweeted:  "…Greene had $183,504 in PPP loans [Covid Paycheck Protection Program for businesses]  forgiven."August 8, 2022

"Hey, WH, if you’re going to continue to drag these hypocrites with clear and hard-hitting messaging, you run a serious risk of surging enthusiasm, electoral success, and continued improvements to the lives of millions of Americans,” ~ author Scott Lynch, Washington Post, August 26, 2022

Biden’s Legislative Accomplishments

________________________________________________________________________________________________

President Joe Biden took the oath of office with the country facing challenges not seen in                                  generations. On top of a once-in-a-century pandemic, the new President inherited an                                        economy that had crumbled. In spite of those conditions, he has managed to get some of his top priorities passed through Congress. From time to time we need to be reminded of his successes.
Bidens Accomplishments click here

"We now have a presidency where the president has delivered the largest economic recovery plan since Roosevelt, the largest infrastructure plan since Eisenhower, the most judges confirmed since Kennedy, the second-largest health care bill since Johnson and the largest climate change bill in history… The first time we've done gun control since President Clinton was here, the first time ever an African American woman has been

put on the U.S. Supreme Court… I think it’s a record to take to the American people,"

~ Ron Klain, Chief of Staff, told Politico (8/19/22)

On Liz Cheney’s Loss of Her House Seat:

“ I hope she doesn’t disappear from public life. Although her views on countless                                                  substantive issues are the opposite of mine, I salute her. She has displayed more                                                  courage and integrity than almost any other member of her party — indeed, given the pressure she was under, perhaps more than any lawmaker now alive”.

Robert Reich
Former Secretary of Labor
Clinton Administration

Urge Senators Kelly And Sinema To Pass These Bills

Thank our two Senators for passing the Inflation Reduction Act and the made-in-USA CHIPS Act. Then ask them to help pass three more bipartisan bills when the Senate reconvenes 9/6, most importantly, the Electoral Count Act reform.  If you already have, our thanks, but ask them again.

1. Reform of Electoral Count Act. It would fill in gaps for the 2024 presidential election certification that Trump-ites tried to exploit on Jan. 6, 2021.

2. Respect for Marriage Act.  Affirms, AKA codifies, that same-sex marriage is settled law and all Americans be treated the same. Passed in July by the House 267-14, with 47 GOP votes.

3. Birth-Control Access Act. Codifies the right to birth-control protections. Passed by the House in July 228-195, with 8 GOP votes.

Contact Sen Mark Kelly (202-224-2235) or use the email form  https://www.kelly.senate.gov/contact/contact-form/

Contact Sen. Kyrsten Sinema,   (202) 224-4521, or use the email form at https://www.sinema.senate.gov/contact-kyrsten/
